Development for research - research for development

Modern gliders like the Antares are characterized by outstanding efficiency. Their sophisticated aerodynamics allow the use of low-power drives. This makes them suitable as scientific test carriers for a wide range of investigations and applications,
which also benefit the further development of large aircraft. Together with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Lange Aviation GmbH developed the Antares H2 fuel cell test vehicle and successfully completed its maiden flight in April 2009.

It was the first time in history that a manned aircraft has performed a complete cycle from takeoff to landing using only fuel cell propulsion. Driven by these successes, Lange Research Aircraft GmbH was founded. The next stage of evolution is the Antares E2. The project started in August 2010 and documents a leap in development. At the same time, the practical benefits of the drive concept are proven.

As with the Antares H2, the new research aircraft is based as far as possible on components from the standard Antares series. While its predecessor had only one fuel cell unit and a fuel tank in aerodynamic tanks under the wings, the Antares E2 uses two advanced fuel cell systems that extend the range from 500 to around 5,400 km.
The flight duration can be up to 40 hours.

The aircraft’s structure, with a wingspan increased to 23 meters, was designed for a maximum takeoff mass of 1,650 kilograms. This allows a payload of 200 kilograms. This sets new standards.

The Antares E2 represents a pioneering sensor platform for a wide range of manned and unmanned civilian Earth observation and remote sensing missions. The synergies are obvious: development for research and research for development go hand in hand at Lange Aviation and Lange Research Aircraft. For mutual benefit.

Antares 18T and 23T - our models with combustion engine

The 30 hp of the proven Solo 2350C engine and a specially adapted large propeller with a diameter of 1.36 meters ensure good climbing performance even at higher altitudes and temperatures. The uncomplicated engine operation makes flying stress-free. Perfect reliability is provided by the optional starter motor. Only 55 kilograms of additional weight for the engine. The fuel tank holds 16 liters – good for a whole hour at full load.

Without water ballast, the Antares 23T has a wing loading of only 34 kilograms per square meter. The three-stage water tank system of the Antares 18T, each with separate surface and trim tanks, allows surface loads of up to 60.2 kg/m². Even fully loaded, narrow and turbulent thermals can be flown out perfectly.

High performance two-seater aircraft

The Arcus is a two-seat high performance glider with 20m wingspan and flaps. Developer and manufacturer of this glider is the company Schempp-Hirth Flugzeugbau GmbH. As part of a cooperation between Lange Aviation and Schempp-Hirth Flugzeugbau, Lange Aviation is equipping a self-launching variant of the Arcus with an electric drive. The designation of this variant is Arcus E. The drive system of the Arcus E is based on the proven drive of the Antares 20E.

23 meter aircraft with combustion engine

The Quintus M is a completely redesigned 23-meter aircraft and was presented to the trade public for the first time at AERO 2011 by the two cooperation partners Lange Aviation and Schempp-Hirth. The Antares 23E and the Quintus M differ mainly in the fuselage, the outer wings and the respective propulsion technology. While the Quintus M is self-launching thanks to a 70 hp internal combustion engine from Solo, the Antares 23E boasts an innovative electric motor. Concept and design of the inner airfoils were done by Lange Aviation and Prof. Loek Boermans. Nine precisely matched profiles with laminar run lengths of 95 percent on the bottom and 75 percent on the top were used, based on a superelliptical floor plan. The outer wings of the Quintus M were designed by Schempp-Hirth with the help of Karl-Heinz Horstmann and Jan Himisch of DLR Braunschweig, while the winglets were developed by Prof. Mark Maughmer. The flaps or ailerons run over the entire wingspan and thus allow very effective and direct control movements. It is also noteworthy that at the beginning of the project in 2011, the verification for the wings was initially performed for the agreed weight of the non-load-bearing parts GNT (loaded fuselage and tailplane) for 380 kg. After it became apparent that this GNT was not tenable, refinements to the verification process in 2013 increased the allowable weight of the nonstructural parts to 403 kg and, in early 2015, to 403 kg plus filling of the wing tank near the fuselage in the left wing. This example shows nicely that considerable reserves can lie dormant even in highly stressed components.
